ROOT CANAL
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
At Valley Center Dental, nothing is more important to us than keeping your existing teeth healthy. Sometimes, a tooth extraction may be necessary, but we view this as a last resort. Any artificial replacement will be more expensive than simply keeping a functioning tooth intact.
Root canals are the best way to save a decayed or damaged tooth from having to be pulled. This procedure is painless and enables you to keep your natural teeth for many years to come.
Are you experiencing persistent pain in a specific tooth? Does the tooth have an additional sensitivity to hot and cold? Does it feel rough or cracked to the touch? All these signs may indicate that you need a root canal.
Teeth are composed of three layers: enamel, dentin, and pulp. A root canal becomes necessary when decay or damage has broken through the first two layers and exposed the tooth’s pulp to the outside. Pulp is meant to be protected, so when it loses its protective shell, it becomes very vulnerable to infection. The tooth’s nerve is also exposed, which causes pain and sensitivity.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE
In most cases, local anesthetic is used during a root canal, so you won’t feel a thing during the procedure. Your dentist will then check inside the tooth and use special tools to clean out the infected pulp, dead tissue, and other debris.
The empty space inside the tooth is then filled with a special material, and the tooth is sealed using a dental filling. Finally, your dentist evaluates whether any additional restorative work is needed on the tooth. Sometimes, a crown is placed to protect the remaining tooth structure.
BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENT
Root canals have a very high success rate, and most teeth that undergo the procedure can last a lifetime as long as you maintain good oral hygiene. The procedure feels very similar to having a filling or crown placed and takes about as long.
If you suspect you may need a root canal, contact us immediately. It’s best to get the procedure done right away to save as much of the original tooth as possible. Get in touch with us via our online form or call our office directly.
